Grupo Ubesol reports a turnover of 284 million and continues to focus on strong quality and innovation

Grupo Ubesol, comprising Ubesol S.L. and Laboratorios Maverick S.L.U., achieved a total consolidated turnover of 284 million euros in 2023, marking a 5.8% increase from 268 million euros the previous year. The group, specialising in Personal and Home Care, recorded a net profit of 9.7 million euros, although it is still far from reaching its pre-pandemic figures, when it exceeded 20 million euros.

Unlike previous years, this year the domestic market saw the most significant sales growth, particularly through Mercadona, its primary customer. These results reflect the team’s unwavering commitment to strong quality and service at Grupo Ubesol.

In terms of internationalisation, especially sales to multinationals, the group is bolstering its expertise and enhancing its understanding of processes and suppliers, while also facing new demands in production processes. This commitment to strong quality has successfully led to the renewal of the IFS HPC certification at its three plants, which assesses production processes to ensure product quality and safety.

Regarding the group’s investments, 7.5 million euros have primarily been allocated to enhancing production capacity, including the implementation of various automations and a software upgrade on the high-speed lines. Reinvestment remains a constant for the group, which has dedicated more than 66 million euros to this area over the past five years, positioning it as one of Spain’s leading manufacturers of wipes, bath gels, shampoos, and deodorants. To continue on this path of robust growth, more than 20 million euros are planned to be reinvested in 2024 to strengthen its production facilities and thus meet the substantial growth of its customers.

Artificial Intelligence, Talent, and Sustainability as Cross-Cutting Axes

Regarding the other key pillars of the strategic plan for 2020-2025, digital transformation continues to advance rapidly at Grupo Ubesol, which is pioneering the implementation of generative Artificial Intelligence across all its processes and in training its staff to maximise the value of this technology.

As for talent management, the company not only continues to commit to creating quality employment (in 2023 the workforce increased by 12%, surpassing 1,000 people) but has also expanded its internal policies on work-life balance.

Grupo Ubesol’s determined commitment to improving its social and environmental impact has led to the development of its 2030 sustainability plan, a roadmap guided by ESG criteria.

It has established a corporate responsibility department, joining the existing communications department, to develop a strategic plan that addresses the social and environmental challenges of the local entities near its three plants in Atzeneta d’Albaida (Valencia), Ulldecona (Tarragona), and San Fernando de Henares (Madrid).

In the environmental realm and as part of the Net Zero GHG emissions goal, it aims to reduce its carbon footprint in the 2020-2030 period, make more efficient use of natural resources, achieve 95% circularity in waste, assess 100% of strategic suppliers, and ensure that 75% of its products contain over 90% naturally derived ingredients.

Through the professionalisation process that the family group has reinforced in recent years, corporate governance has been strengthened with the creation of a Board of Directors, to which independent professionals with extensive experience in management and corporate control have been added, aligned with the group’s values.

Grupo Ubesol’s CEO, Jorge Úbeda, emphasises that “2023 was a year of normalisation in the supply chains, which allowed us to slightly improve margins, thanks to optimisations in the production processes and procurement costs. Our commitment to maintaining striking quality every day and excellent service makes us a trustworthy partner. Therefore, looking ahead to 2024, we continue to reinvest strongly in the company, to keep up with the growth of our customers, especially Mercadona, with the aim of enhancing competitiveness in all our processes and continuing to lead in the categories in which we specialise.”

We installed chargers for electric vehicles powered by solar energy

At Grupo Ubesol, we continue to drive sustainability forward with the implementation of a charging system for electric and hybrid vehicles, located at our two plants in Atzeneta d’Albaida. This innovative installation is exclusively powered by solar energy, generated by one of the largest photovoltaic plants in the industry.

In 2022, at Ubesol and Laboratorios Maverick Ulldecona, we launched a photovoltaic plant composed of 4,800 solar panels that produces 20% of our energy demand and prevents the emission of 1,300 annual tons of CO2. Additionally, it now also powers a charging system for electric and hybrid vehicles, like those that make up the company’s fleet.

This project represents not only an advancement in the company’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure but also reflects Grupo Ubesol’s commitment to the United Nations Global Compact and its active contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and 13 (Climate Action).

The CEO of Grupo Ubesol, Jorge Úbeda, highlighted the importance of this project: “This initiative reflects our firm commitment to integrating environmental protection into our business model and our operations strategy. We are convinced that through projects like this, we can make a significant contribution not only to our corporate objectives but also to global challenges in sustainability.”

The project to implement charging points at Ubesol has been subsidized by the MOVES III program with financial support from the European Union within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, and the Recovery and Resilience Facility, as well as with participation from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, the IDAE, and the IVACE.

The V Grupo Ubesol Annual Meeting brings together its more than 1,000 people to continue boosting its growth

At the end of December, we held our V Annual Meeting, which brought together the more than 1,000 people who are part of Grupo Ubesol, to look back and review the great milestones achieved in 2023 and detail the growth forecasts for 2024.

The CEO of Grupo Ubesol, Jorge Úbeda, highlighted the importance of continuing to put the client at the centre of all decisions, since it is the best way to create products of the highest quality, the guarantee that Grupo Ubesol offers every day in its products and productive processes.

José Manuel Soler, Deputy CEO and People General Director, also participated in this V Annual Meeting, which was held at the three Grupo Ubesol headquarters located in Valencia, Madrid and Tarragona, who highlighted the importance of continuing to improve processes, so that the company runs with the precision of a Swiss watch.

To this end, Grupo Ubesol has not hesitated to be one of the first companies to incorporate Artificial Intelligence in some areas, with the intention of taking advantage of the benefits it offers and turning it into a valuable resource for all departments.

In the last year, the group has taken great steps in its international expansion, one of its strategic pillars, with the incorporation of new clients to its portfolio. In 2022, we will exceed 70 million units sold internationally, mainly of Personal Care products such as shower gels, deodorants, shampoos, and wet wipes.

Our main way of growing internationally has been via Contract Manufacturing or TPM for the main multinationals in the sector worldwide and, to a lesser extent, via Private Label for some of the main retailers in Europe. In this way, the products manufactured by Grupo Ubesol begin to be sold throughout Europe and in new markets such as the USA, the Middle East, the Maghreb and South America.

The V Annual Meeting culminated with the traditional Christmas lunch, in which we were able to share anecdotes and good moments with colleagues, after a year of intense work, full of valuable learning.

We are ready to face an exciting 2024, in which we will continue to focus on excellence in all our products and services.

THE ATZENETA UE, SPONSORED BY GRUPO UBESOL, MAKES HISTORY IN THE COPA DEL REY TOURNAMENT

Atzeneta UE story is one of overcoming. The football team sponsored by Grupo Ubesol made history yesterday by beating Real Zaragoza 2-1 and eliminating it from the Copa del Rey tournament.

The club from Atzeneta d’Albaida, the small town in Valencia with just over 1,000 inhabitants where Ubesol was founded, once again demonstrated that, with effort, perseverance and great teamwork, no goal is impossible to achieve.

The team that we sponsor lived an unforgettable night, in which they managed to beat Real Zaragoza, from the Second Division, thanks to the commitment and daily work of their entire squad and the drive of their supporters that are always by the team’s side.

The trajectory of Atzeneta UE is linked to Grupo Ubesol, which, since the beginning, has collaborated with the team, although it was in the 2016-2017 season when a sponsorship relationship was formalised that made the club take off. The involvement of the company and the motivation to achieve great challenges made it possible for the team to increase its professionalism and reap success after success. In the 2019-2020 season, led by coach David Albelda, they were promoted to Second Division B, the third category in Spain.

Nowadays, the team is in Third RFEF, three categories below Real Zaragoza, which they managed to surpass last Tuesday, with goals from Brandon and Mario Uclés.

Atzeneta UE now moves on to the second round of the tournament and will once again play a historic match against a LaLiga team, quite a feat for a small town with great hopes.

At Grupo Ubesol, we continue to give our support to projects such as the Atzeneta UE, which are committed to effort and continuous improvement to achieve great results based on cooperation and teamwork.

Grupo Ubesol increases its turnover by 5.8% and consolidates its international growth

Grupo Ubesol, integrated by the companies Ubesol S.L. and Laboratorios Maverick S.L.U., obtained a total consolidated turnover of more than 268 million euros in 2022, 5.8% more than the 253 million registered in 2021, thanks above all to the important growth experienced in international markets.

The global context in 2022, dominated by the increase in costs due to the rise in the cost of raw materials, logistics and energy, has caused a significant reduction in the group’s profits compared to the previous year. While in 2021 the net profit was 9.8 million euros, in 2022 it was 1.15 million euros. It should be noted that this loss of margin, assumed by the group, has contributed favorably to curbing inflation in the final price of its products.

Within the 20-25 Strategic Plan presented by the company, internationalisation is one of the key pillars for the future of the group and in 2022 there will already be more than 70 million units sold internationally, mainly of Personal Care products such as Shower Gels, Deodorants, Shampoos and a wide range of Wet Wipes. Its main way of growing internationally has been via Contract Manufacturing or TPM for the main multinationals in the Sector worldwide and to a lesser extent via Private Label for some of the main Retailers in Europe. In this way, the products manufactured by Grupo Ubesol begin to be sold throughout Europe and in new markets such as the USA, the Middle East, the Maghreb and South America.

The main strength in being able to work with the main multinationals in the sector has undoubtedly been the quality, not only of the products but also of the production processes to guarantee quality every day. That is why, in terms of quality, the group continues to bet heavily on international certifications and adds the IFS HPC in Ubesol in 2022 (at Laboratorios Maverick since 2020) to guarantee total quality in all phases of supply. This certification is added to the set of certifications that the company already has in the environmental dimension, such as ISO 14001, ISO 50001, FSC and, in the field of Occupational Health and Safety, ISO 45001. In addition, it is a member of Sedex Smeta and Ecovadis.

Regarding its sustainability strategy, other of the strategic pillars of Grupo Ubesol, in 2022 a strong investment was made in energy self-consumption, with the installation of 4,800 solar panels, which occupy 12,300m2. This has allowed it to become one of the largest photovoltaic plants in the personal care sector, which will generate approximately 20% of the energy demand of its production plants and will avoid the annual emission of 1,300 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. In addition, these solar panels power the chargers in the electric car spaces that the company has enabled, free of charge, for its internal collaborators and visitors, in order to promote sustainable mobility. The group’s commitment to integrating environmental protection has led it to expand its strategic Sustainability Plan until 2030.

The CEO of Grupo Ubesol, Jorge Úbeda, explains that “The industry is experiencing very difficult years and is forcing us to continually reinvent ourselves and, although our sales forecasts from the 20-25 strategic plan are being met, our profitability has fallen considerably in in recent years mainly due to the effects of the pandemic, energy costs, problems with global supply chains and raw material prices.

All of this has led us to rethink important changes internally to be able to adapt better and faster to new times and to review our entire organisational structure to also improve costs and, above all, response agility. For this reason, between 2022 and 2023, we have completely renewed the entire Board of Directors and we will continue to invest heavily in innovation to regain profitability in the future. This is why, despite having a large R&D team of around 60 professionals, distributed between Ulldecona and Atzeneta d’Albaida, we have opened a new innovation centre in 2022 in the Science Park of the University of Valencia. A strategic location accompanied by a reference ecosystem of innovation and research, which will undoubtedly help us to continue improving the quality of our products and in the search for innovative solutions for our clients.”

WE HOLD THE IV ANNUAL ASSEMBLY TO REVIEW THE MILESTONES ACHIEVED IN 2022

Grupo Ubesol held this Friday, December 16, the IV Annual Meeting, which was aimed to review the milestones achieved in 2022 and inform about the forecasts for 2023 to all its 800 employees.

Grupo Ubesol CEO, Jorge Úbeda, highlighted the importance of always putting the customer at the centre of all decisions, since it is the best way to create products of the highest quality, the distinction that runs through the DNA of Grupo Ubesol.

In this IV Annual Meeting, which was held online, José Manuel Soler, Deputy CEO, People & Sustainability, stressed that, despite the complex economic situation, marked by inflation and difficulties in the supply chain, the company has maintained the highest quality in all its products. In addition, thanks to the great work of the purchasing and planning teams, it has overcome obstacles to continue serving clients on time.

Grupo Ubesol progresses in its international expansion with the incorporation of new clients to its portfolio, which provide it with experience and increase its specialisation in the categories of Personal and Home care, especially in the development and manufacture of shampoos, shower gels, deodorants and wet wipes.

With the aim of continuing to improve, the CEO also indicated that it is essential to create synergies with the best suppliers, to make them partners in the great innovation that it carries out in its products and services.

In the field of sustainability, the company has taken great steps by starting up one of the largest photovoltaic plants in the personal care industry, with which it produces 20% of its energy demand and prevents the emission of 1,300 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Looking ahead to next year, Grupo Ubesol will present its new Sustainability Plan, to set its own goals in terms of reducing plastic, waste and energy consumption, with which it seeks to be a company that is increasingly respectful of the planet.

WE LAUNCH ONE OF THE LARGEST PHOTOVOLTAIC PLANTS IN THE PERSONAL CARE INDUSTRY

  • We will generate 20% of the energy demand of our four plants
  • We will manufacture 2 out of 10 products using solar energy
  • We will avoid the emission of 1,300 annual tons of CO2 into the atmosphere

The commitment to integrate the protection of the environment and sustainability in all the processes of Grupo Ubesol has led us to invest 1.5 million euros in the construction of one of the largest photovoltaic plants in the Personal & Home Care industry, the sector where we have been operating for more than 40 years.

This ambitious project is made up of 4,800 solar panels that occupy 12,300m² of the roofs of our factories. The modules are installed in the two companies that make up the Grupo Ubesol: Ubesol, located in Atzeneta d’Albaida (Valencia), which specialises in the manufacture of textile products and wet wipes for personal and home care, and Laboratorios Maverick, in Ulldecona (Tarragona), which houses one of the largest laboratories in Europe for the development of personal care products such as shampoos, bath gels and deodorants.

Thanks to this innovative infrastructure, the company, which in 2021 had a turnover of 253 million euros, will produce 20% of its energy demand, which is equivalent to the annual consumption of 1,000 homes in Spain. In this way, we will manufacture 2 out of 10 products using solar energy. The rest of our consumption will continue to come from 100% green energy, that is, it has been generated from renewable sources or high-efficiency cogeneration.

With an installed capacity of 2,600 kWp, the plant will generate 3,600 MWh per year and will prevent the emission of 1,300 tons of CO2 per year into the atmosphere, an amount similar to that absorbed by 650,000 pine trees during the same period of time.

The new plant adds to the solar installation that the Laboratorios Maverick production centre in San Fernando de Henares (Madrid) already had, which consists of 252 panels and an installed power of 50 kWp.

As a member of the United Nations Global Compact, we thus contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 7, 9, 12 and 13, which seek to promote sustainable and innovative production and an affordable and non-polluting energy model. In short, preserve the future of the planet.

The CEO of Grupo Ubesol, Jorge Úbeda, has highlighted that the new photovoltaic plant represents “a great milestone in the company’s sustainability strategy”. “The start-up of this large solar infrastructure is part of a Strategic Plan, which integrates sustainability into all of Grupo Ubesol’s processes, and demonstrates our leadership in renewable energy within the sector.”

Grupo Ubesol consolidates its growth in 2021, after increasing its sales by 3% to achieve a turnover of 253 million

Grupo Ubesol, formed by the companies Ubesol S.L. and Laboratorios Maverick S.L.U, obtained, in 2021, a total consolidated turnover of 253 million euros, 3% more than the 247 million in 2020.

The evolution of sales was very uneven among the companies. While Ubesol obtained a turnover of 129 million, 9% more than in 2020, Laboratorios Maverick registered 132 million, a drop of 4% compared to the previous year, due in part to the decrease in the sale of hydroalcoholic gel, which stood out in 2020.

In 2021, the Group continued to lower prices in order to maintain competitiveness and, in the second half, saw an increase in raw material costs. All this caused that, despite the increase in sales, the results were significantly reduced to 13 million euros of net profit.

Following the 2020-2025 Strategic Plan, the Group has completely changed the management committee and has a new management team, with the aim of consolidating the national market and relaunching activity in foreign markets.

This exit to international markets meant for the company to discover diverse markets and clients, which increase its high specialisation in certain categories, such as bath gels. This positions it at the forefront of new lines of research, trends and consumption habits.

That is why Grupo Ubesol is trying to reduce the number of businesses in which it is present with the aim of focusing on those in which it has strong competitive advantages and to be able to improve quality and innovation day by day.

The Group continues to place sustainabilityat the centre of its business strategy. It has achieved  the ISO 50001 certification, which endorse its energy efficiency management, the EcoVadis Gold Medal, which recognises it as a sustainable supplier, and Zero Waste, which certifies the reduction of waste and its reintroduction into the production cycle.

Regarding digital transformation, the Valencian company has made notable progress such as the launch of the Real Time area, dedicated to monitoring production in real time, the automation of a large part of its processes and the use of AI to gain efficiency in manufacturing, as well as flexibility in production processes.

Grupo Ubesol CEO, Jorge Úbeda, highlighted the complexity in the supply chain and the increase in costs that began to be glimpsed during the second half of 2021. “For this reason, we decided to focus our efforts on what we are good at, to reduce complexity in internal processes, be more competitive and improve quality. The maximum efficiency in all processes, together with quality and innovation, are the great assets that can help us emerge stronger from this difficult situation, both nationally and internationally”, he pointed out.

Our new photovoltaic plant, one of the largest in the industry

At Grupo Ubesol we are immersed in an ambitious project, in line with our commitment to consume only renewable energy: the installation of one of the largest photovoltaic plants in our sector.

We have started the construction of 2 new photovoltaic plants in Ubesol (in Atzeneta d’Albaida, Valencia) and Laboratorios Maverick (in Ulldecona, Tarragona), which will have a total of 4,800 solar panels, equivalent to an installed power of 2,600 kWp, and with which we can generate around 3,600 MW annually.

Using solar energy, we will cover 20% of the energy demand of the entire group, which is equivalent to the annual consumption of 1,000 homes in Spain. The forecast is that the installation will be completed during next September and will begin to function at full capacity.

Our Maverick Laboratories plant in San Fernando de Henares already has a photovoltaic plant with 252 plates, equivalent to an installed power of 50 kWp.

The rest of our consumption comes from energy with a “GdO” guarantee of origin certificate, which means it has been generated from renewable energy sources or high-efficiency cogeneration.

With these new solar plants, we contribute to SDGs 7, 9, 12 and 13 and achieve our goal of reducing CO2 emissions and caring for the planet.

WE LAUNCH GRUPO UBESOL 2021 SUSTAINABILITY REPORTS

We are very glad to share the 2021 Sustainability Reports of the companies inside Grupo Ubesol, Ubesol and Laboratorios Maverick, are out. These reports detail the progress we have made to reduce the environmental impact of our activity and the actions we have promoted to contribute to the progress of our communities.

We are aware that, in order to achieve our goals in the field of sustainability, it is necessary to involve the entire value chain, from the design of the product to its delivery to the customer, taking into account the supply of raw materials and production phases.

We would like to highlight three actions we have implemented in the last year in order to reduce our environmental impact.

We carry out specific actions with which we contribute to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on those most directly related to industrial activity, as we believe they are the ones we can most influence.

We have certified the energy management system of our 4 plants with ISO 50001, which means that we implement energy saving processes to consume fewer resources.

80% of our suppliers are national and, for example, in the treatment of waste, we only trust companies that ensure them a second life.

However, we are prepared to extend our actions. Our purpose is to enhance our plans to be, every day, a more sustainable company.

We are carrying out a project to install solar panels, with which we will reduce our electricity consumption by 20%, which is equivalent to the electricity consumption of more than 1,000 homes in Spain for a year.

We have also created the Grupo Ubesol Sustainability Committee, a multidisciplinary team made up of all the areas of the group to share a global vision of sustainability.

Our aim is to boost innovative and sustainable growth that benefits the communities where we operate.

We join the celebration of World Environment Day on Sunday June 5, because we believe a better planet is possible.

The world is a wonderful place. Let’s take care of it!
